London South East
LONDON (Alliance News) – Gulfsands Petroleum PLC Friday said that although it found gas at its third exploration well in the Rharb site in Morocco, it has plugged and abandoned the site.
The oil-and-gas exploration-and-production company with operations in the Middle East and North Africa said operations have been completed on its third exploration well of the Rharb drilling campaign, which was drilled to planned depth ahead of schedule and under budget.
The company said the Ben Fidal 2 well was drilled to a total depth of 1025 metres over a period of 10 days and encountered significant gas flows through a 60 metre space.
However, the company said that logging indicated the space is filled with very finely laminated sand and shale, which may lead to difficult production.
As a result, Gulfsands said it decided to plug and abandon the site as a non-commercial gas discovery.
In December, the company said its first two exploration wells at the site also failed to find commercial levels of gas.
The company said additional evaluation methods are required in order to more fully evaluate the commercialisation of these finely laminated reservoir sections.
