His Majesty King Mohamed VI officially opened the Tanger-Saadia highway on 11 August. An EU donation of €125 million was used to construct a 103 kilometre stretch of this highway, connecting El Jebha and Al Hoceina.
Mrs Camelia SUICA, Deputy Head of the EU delegation to Morocco, said: “With a donation of 1.3 billion dirhams, this building site is to date the most major piece of infrastructure funding offered by the European Union in the north of Africa. By taking part in this important project for the kingdom, the European Union confirms its commitment to support Morocco in its efforts to open up the populations of the Rif region and to integrate all the provinces of the north of the kingdom economically, regionally and nationally”.
A network of secondary rural roads will follow and will make a significant contribution to the development of the region. The European Union is also involved in this project by providing funding for the construction of the 4105 Chefchaouen-Oued Laou rural road.
This motorway section between El Jebha and Al Hoceina passes through a region with substantial tourist and fisheries resources. It is also a major hub for East-West trade. This new road will open up the provinces of Chefchaouen and Al Hoceima.
An innovative technique to build reinforced earth retaining walls was used for the first time. This technique, on which Moroccan professionals in this sector were trained, has enriched Morocco’s technical capacities in the fields of engineering and construction and has made it possible to build cheaper retaining walls.
