Develop 100 - So who was number 100?

Pilotwings Resort developer takes up the last spot with £2m in UK retail revenue in 2011

Previously we looked at the success of a number of Ubisoft’s studios in the Develop 100, with four of its branches from France, Casablanca, Montreal and the UK making the list.

Over the coming weeks Develop will be publishing extracts and highlight data from the book, which uses GfK Chart-Track research on retail sales to formulate a ranking based on UK revenues.

The Develop 100 is an iPad-exclusive book, available for just £4.99 via the Develop iPad app. Click here to download it.

Today we look at the studio which made it into the number 100 spot, US developer Monster Games.

MONSTER GAMES

History: Founded in 1996, the independent studio is based in Northfield, Minnesota, USA.

Success in 2011: Monster Games made its £2m revenue in UK retail revenue during 2011 from its Nintendo-published 3DS title Pilotwings Resort.

Analysis: Never underestimate the strength of revivals. Pilotwings is a lesser-known Nintendo classic, but you wouldn’t have thought so given the excitement when a sequel was announced for the launch of the 3DS.

Pilotwings Resortsingle-handedly made £2 million in sales and secured Monster Games this final place in the Develop 100. An experienced racing developer with a back catalogue of NASCAR titles, since 2006, Monster has worked closely with Nintendo.

The studio was founded by Richard Garcia and employs approximately 20 staff.

After the relative success of Pilotwings Resort, it remains to be seen whether Monster games will revisit any other vintage Nintendo IP.
