London – Morocco’s family law “mudawana” is a model for a more credible strategy for women’s empowerment in the MENA region, wrote British daily Financial Times on Thursday.
The paper, which analyzed the situation of women following the Arab Spring, said that the 2004 reform of the mudawana brought restrictions on polygamy, raised the age of marriage from 15 to 18 and granted wives joint responsibility over family matters.
It was the result of efforts made as part of reforms carried out by Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, it said.
