Lincoln prepares to host royalty at Moroccan Market of Handicrafts
Lincoln is looking forward to being graced by royalty on Wednesday as a special guest heads to the city to launch the Moroccan Market of Handicrafts.
Lincoln BIG events and promotions manager Michael Armstrong says: “We are thrilled to announce that Her Highness Princess Lalla Joumala and her party are to visit Lincoln.”

Her Highness Princess Lalla Joumala, Ambassador of His Majesty The King of Morocco to the Court of St James in London, is coming to open Lincolnshire’s very own Souk.
Princess Joumala, who is heading a delegation which is expected to include the Minister of Handicrafts Abdessamad Qaiouh and the Director of Handicraft at Maison de L’Artisan Abdlah Aadnani, will formally launch the Moroccan Market of Handicrafts.
This event, which runs until May 20, will see the central High Street and Cornhill areas transformed, bringing shoppers and visitors the sights and sounds of a traditional souk.
Traders, manning 36 stalls, laden with all manner of goods – from leather purses, wallets and bags to Berber rugs, lamps, silver jewellery, eye-catching mirrors, grass baskets, slippers – will be tempting shoppers to stop for a chat and take a closer look at their products.
On the first day of the market there will also be a chance to enjoy authentic Moroccan music, provided by two 10-strong groups – the Gnawa Band and Berber Band.
The Princess’s party is also planning to visit the Chad Varah Primary School in St Giles, Lincoln, which has been involved in previous Moroccan markets, and it is hoped that Moroccan Television will cover the opening ceremony.
Michael adds: “The Moroccan Markets are always very popular and they add an exotic flavour to the city centre, but this time the experience is going to be more exciting than ever.
“We know that these events help to strengthen trading links between the UK and Morocco, but they also attract shoppers from miles around and help to encourage more tourists to visit our beautiful city.
“We are really looking forward to this special event, which we are sure will prove to be even more successful than our previous Moroccan markets.”
Moroccan Market of Handicrafts will be held around the central High Street and Cornhill in Lincoln from Wednesday until Sunday.
