New York – Morocco expressed, on Friday, its deep concern over the proliferation of terrorist activities in the Sahel and western Africa and called for a “constructive partnership and a spirit of shared responsibility” that breaks with “narrow political calculations”.
Addressing a UN Security Council meeting on the threats posed to peace and security by international terrorist groups, Morocco’s Minister Delegate to Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Youssef Amrani reiterated Morocco’s deep concerns over the surge of terrorist activities in the region of the Sahel and western Africa.
In this respect, Amrani stressed the pressing need for establishing a sustainable framework for dialogue, cooperation and solidarity involving all the countries concerned with the region’s security and stability.
In light of the latest developments in the region, Amrani highlighted the links and connivance between terrorist groups, separatist movements and drug and arms trafficking networks in the region.
The Moroccan official recalled Morocco’s constant position against all forms of terrorism, adding that the Kingdom’s anti-terrorism strategy is in line with the UN’s.
The success of Morocco’s anti-terrorism strategy is ascribed to a multi-dimensional approach that aims at addressing the social, economic and cultural aspects that could feed extremist ideologies, Amrani went on to say.
