A SUFFOLK woman is embarking on one of the most gruelling races in the world.
Mia Batty, from Little Whelnetham, is taking part in the Marathon des Sables, in Morroco, which starts on April 5.
The gruelling challenge sees competitors run six desert marathons in just seven days.
Entrants run and walk a massive 151 miles in baking heat across the Sahara Desert, carrying all their equipment and food with them on their backs.
And to make matters worse, Mia will find the flight to Morocco terrifying in itself as she has a fear of flying.
She said: “It is six marathons in seven days in Morocco.
“Because we have to carry all our kit while we run, it makes it exceptionally difficult.
“I am training with a 10kg weight on my back just to get used to what it will be like.
“You cannot get there if you haven’t trained hard-– you would be kicked off the event.”
Mia is raising money for two charities – Hope 4 China and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
