Marrakech – Young people should be perceived as effective actors and activists within their societies and not as mere consumers, former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said.
Speaking at a meeting, on Tuesday in Marrakech, within the framework of the 2nd US-Maghreb Entrepreneurship Conference, Albright noted that the uprisings that took place in several Arab countries mirror the youth’s ambition for change, democracy and dignity.
She underlined the pressing need that governments act in a way that meets the expectations of citizens and build fruitful partnerships with the private sector, stressing the civil society’s role as an indispensable actor in economic development efforts.
She insisted on the necessity to reduce the existing social gaps which could be dangerous, adding that every state should have some kind of foresight in order to promote rights and set up an appropriate legal and institutional system that would generate growth and boost investments.
She highlighted the role of entrepreneurship in ameliorating the living conditions of populations.
