Washington – Morocco and Tunisia have made “very important” strides in the road of democracy, enabling their peoples to freely express their opinions through fair and transparent polls, chairman of the Washington-based Maghreb Center, Tunisian Nejib Ayachi, told Moroccan MAP news agency.

“Peoples of both Maghreb countries have, thus, a say in the matter: in Morocco thanks to the reforms, set up by King Mohammed VI since his enthronement, which were crowned by the adoption of a new constitution and the election of November 25, and in Tunisia thanks to the revolution,” said Ayachi, also specialist in Maghreb issues.

He also said that the consolidation of democracy fits the Maghreb integration that the region’s peoples aspire to achieve.

Moreover, he said, the telephone conversation that the new President of Tunisia, Moncef Marzouki, had on Wednesday with HM King Mohammed VI, the first with a foreign head of state, reflects first and foremost “an affirmation of Tunisia’s belonging to the Maghreb.”

“Morocco and Tunisia are two democratic countries which should join forces and work together in the hope that other countries in the region will join them,” concluded the chairman of the Maghreb Center.
