The Spanish trade union CC.OO. has said that unfair competition from Moroccan tomatoes is seriously endangering the survival of the Canary tomato sector and the 16,000 families that depend on the activity.

The organisation points out that an archipelago with an unemployment rate exceeding 33 percent cannot afford the loss of such an important sector, which mostly employs low skilled women over 45, who are therefore unlikely to be able to re-enter the labour market.

CC.OO. assures that the conditions of labourers in Morocco’s tomato sector “are extremely precarious, with salaries that do not exceed EUR 0.70 per hour, with endless shifts and without social protection.”

It also asked the Canary Government, the Central Government and the EU to demand that Morocco ensures decent working conditions and for its exports to be controlled.
