Madrid – The fight against illegal migration is not an “easy task”, but a “shared responsibility” between Morocco and Spain,Minister delegate for Foreign Affairs, Youssef Amrani said, stressing the need to deal with the issue in a balanced way and in an environment of shared responsibility.
Speaking to Spanish Cadena Ser radio Tuesday night, the Moroccan official said that Morocco, which has gone under “a strong pressure from immigration” especially from sub-Saharan Africa, deals with the issue of illegal migration within the full respect of the fundamental rights and dignity of the migrants.
Morocco, which has turned into a destination for illegal immigration, “has made great efforts” to solve this problem that costs a lot to the north African country, said Amrani, adding that Morocco has a “firm will” to sort this issue out through a “global approach.”
The minister, who hailed Morocco-Spain cooperation in the area, said illegal migration “difficult and complicated” and requires also the input of the EU and Africa, stressing that the problem “cannot be solved only through control measures, but needs a global approach” that take account of border surveillance, promoting development and the expression of solidarity from Europe.
“If we don’t solve the roots of illegal migration through development and solidarity, we won’t succeed in fighting illegal migration,” Amrani stressed, underling the concept of shared responsibility with Europe. “We must come up with a coherent response within a global and balanced vision that includes the countries origin, transit and destination countries.”
Morocco cannot face up these phenomena alone, the minister said, recalling the action plan of the Rabat conference on migration and development, which had instituted a partnership between the origin, transit and destination countries with the aim of bringing about the appropriate responses to the central issue of migratory flows through the joint management from Africa and Europe.
