Moroccan Mahjoub El Haiba has been elected member of the Human Rights Committee, an independent experts’ body that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its State parties.
His election was made Thursday in New York during the 38th Meeting of States Parties to the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights.
Mr. El Haiba will serve in the Committee for a 4-year mandate. He was Secretary General of the ex-advisory Council for Human Rights (which becomes National Council for Human Rights) and First Inter-ministerial Delegate for Human Rights in Morocco.
The Human Rights Committee is composed of 18 independent experts recognized for their competence in the field of human rights.
All States parties to the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights are being implemented. The Committee examines each report and addresses its concerns and recommendations.
