French renewable power producer Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) will examine the potential for supplying electricity to a Moroccan potash project developed by Emmerson Plc (LON:EML).

The Isle of Man-registered company wants 100% renewable energy supply and has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Voltalia to explore this possibility. Such a move could enhance the potash project’s economics, according to Emmerson.

“Based on early discussions, a renewable electricity contract has the potential to deliver significant cost savings on electricity consumption compared to the assumptions used in the Scoping Study,” stated Emmerson’s CEO Hayden Locke, adding that the improvement to economics could be “extremely meaningful.”

Emmerson noted that relying on renewables will not bring additional capital costs or operating risk because electricity would be supplied over the Moroccan energy transmission grid.
