The international congress on renewable energy ‘Photovoltaica’ is opening its doors on February 13-15 in Marrakech and vies to become a platform for projects across Africa.
Morocco has a development plan based on four pillars – socio-economic, environmental, social and cultural aspects – and has been working during the past few years to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. More has to be accomplished in the renewable energy sector, which is why the third edition of ‘Photovoltaica’, called ‘Towards sustainable development in Africa’, at the palace of Congress, wants to become the top international fair in Africa on renewable energy.
Italy is one of the role models; participants include Res4Med, the platform to promote renewable energy in the Mediterranean, Res4Africa and Enel GreenPower, researching how to liberalize Morocco’s electricity market.
When the development plan will be effective, Morocco will be able to save up to 6 GDP points with a gross expenditure of 2%.
Sun, wind and relevant water resources have allowed the country to gain a leading role in Africa on renewable energy.
By 2030 it will however need to provide a 185% increase in energy demand and 68% more in electricity.
Created thanks to the cooperation between the ministry of energy, mining, water and sustainable development with the Moroccan agency of renewables (Masen) and the sector’s investment company Sie, the forum in Marrakech, with its over 700 guests, vies to be a place of exchanges and collaborations among countries and companies in the sector. Organizers are investing a lot on meetings between institutional African figures and investors, hoping that Photovoltaica will promote projects across the continent, starting from the Moroccan platform.
