King Mohammed VI of Morocco has ordered the government and the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) to hold comprehensive consultations on the issue of illegal abortion, which has become a “medical matter of preference.”
To that end, King Mohammed VI, on Monday received in Rabat, the Minister of Justice and Freedoms, Mustapha Ramid and the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, as well as Driss El Yazami, the President of CNDH, and ordered them to “hold a series of wide-ranging meetings and consultations with all stakeholders, in order to have their opinions,” the royal Cabinet said in a statement.
He also ordered the competent ministries and the president of CNDH to “coordinate and cooperate with the High Council of Ulemas, in order to exchanges views on the different opinions and orientations”, within a one-month deadline, the same source added.
According to the monarch, the illegal abortion issue should be tackled “in compliance with the Islamic precepts of, by taking into account the virtues of Ijtihad and the support for the evolution taking place in the Moroccan society and its aspirations, while respecting its unity, cohesion and specificities.”
According to figures released by the Moroccan Association against Illegal Abortion, some 1,400 illegal abortions are performed on a daily basis in the kingdom.
