Morocco Launches Action Plan For Tourism Promotion

Morocco announced on Monday a short-term action plan to promote its tourism sector in some foreign markets.
Provided with 100 million dirhams (nearly 1 million euro), this action plan aims to monitor the development of different source markets with the view to mitigate the impact of events in Paris and an amalgamation that followed from it and to preserve the activities of tourist companies, whether hotel or supply, a statement from the Ministry of Tourism said.

The Kingdom which has exceeded for the first time, the 10 million visitors in 2013, has ambition to double that figure by 2020.

According to the same source, a public-private monitoring committee, established on 14 January 2015 has indeed noted a “decline in bookings, particularly from the French market” and “reported a delicate situation at indicators forecast of the first quarter of 2015”.

The plan includes, among others, a “joint involvement of French and Moroccan tourism stakeholders to confirm Morocco’s stability and inform about security guarantee”, the statement read.

With nearly two million visitors per year, French visitors are the first contingent in Morocco where the tourism sector represents about 10% of GDP.

The Plan also includes shares consolidation on Spanish and Italian markets and seeking growth opportunities in markets with high potential such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Holland, strengthening marketing strategy on the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, China, Brazil and African countries’ emerging markets.

The year 2014 ended with a positive growth of 2.5 percent of tourist arrivals and 2.4 percent of overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments, compared to the previous year.

As for tourism earnings, they are maintained almost at the same level as 2013, with 59 billion DH (around 5.7 million).
