Iranian Director Reza Mirkarimi won the best film award at Rabat International Film Festival in Morocco with his latest production ‘Today’.
Iran’s representative in Morocco film festival also won the Audience Award for the best film and the best actor award for Parviz parastouei.
“Today” is the story of a Tehran taxi driver who becomes the impromptu protector of a desperate young pregnant woman after he rushes her to hospital. Acclaimed Iranian actor Parviz Parastooei and actress Shabnam Moqaddami along with some other cast members star in the film.
Reza Mirkarimi has made Under the Moonlight (2001), The Child and the Soldier (2001), So Close, So Far (2005), As Simple as That (2008) and A Cube of Sugar (2011) before his last film, Today.
Mirkarimi’s “A Cube of Sugar” was selected as the Iranian entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013, but the Iranian Government boycotted the 2013 Oscars in the wake of the anti-Islam video “Innocence of Muslims” made in the United States that denigrated Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
Mirkarimi had received the 2008 Golden St. George award of Moscow International Film Festival, the 2001 Best Screenplay Prize of Asia-Pacific Film Festival and the 2001 Special Jury Prize of Tokyo International Film Festival.
Earlier, Iran’s Oscar selection committee had selected “Today” to represent the country in the upcoming Oscar race for the best foreign language film.
