The EU Delegation to Morocco has organised a two-day press trip to the region of Marrakech, aiming to shed light on EU support for reforms in the fields of health, education and literacy. EU assistance in these areas combines budget support focusing on policy outcomes, and technical cooperation that assists capacity building and governance. The press trip was the first of a series of initiatives aimed to raise awareness of EU assistance to Morocco on ongoing reforms.
The journalists were invited to meet Head of Delegation Ambassador Eneko Landaburu, Moroccan Health Minister El Houcine El Ouardi, as well as the general secretaries of the ministries of Economy and Finance and of National Education. They were taken to the regions of Settat, Tahannaout and Chichaoua to have a concrete overview of the impact of these programmes on the local population.
Ambassador Landaburu said: “We would like to reinforce the communication around these initiatives and bring more visibility to the European Union’s support to the important reforms that Morocco has undertaken in such strategic and vital areas as health and education.”
The four EU programmes in the fields of health, education and literacy highlighted during the trip concern:
1. The implementation of an educational strategy that aims to guarantee a quality education that is compulsory and accessible to all.
2. The support to the implementation of the national literacy strategy, whose objectives are to eradicate illiteracy, to increase the lasting effects of trainings and to prepare the academic, professional and economic future of the successful candidates of the literacy programmes.
3. The support to the consolidation of basic health care coverage, aiming for a lasting improvement in conditions of access to quality basic health care services for the poor and the vulnerable.
4. The support to health system reforms that aim to improve the performance of the Moroccan health care system, in terms of quantity, quality and accessibility, especially to the population of disadvantaged areas.
