A large Moroccan bank, Banque Centrale Populaire, has applied with regulators to establish it’s first U.S. office in the District.
The Casablanca-based institution is Morocco’s second-largest lender, according to Reuters, and has about $28 billion in assets.
It’s not clear what its plans are for the Washington area or the U.S. market as a whole. A bank representative didn’t respond to a request for comment before press time.
The bank already has a presence in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, The United Kingdom, Canada, Abu Dhabi, Switzerland, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Guinea and the Central African Republic.
