Grace Lee’s ‘Visions of Morocco’ Makeup Look

As Head Makeup Artist for Maybelline Canada, Grace Lee was tasked with creating fresh and vibrant looks for Toronto Fashion Week. We learned about the tips and tricks she used to get the striking look seen on the models for Lucian Matis’ spring 2013 runway collection.

What was Lucian Matis’ makeup concept for this collection?

Grace Lee: He really wanted a pop of colour for spring. He said he wanted ‘visions of Morocco,’ and… ‘I want an orange-red lip.’

What products did you use to create the look?

Grace Lee: On the lips we used Electric Orange, part of the new Vivids [Collection] that are coming out in January, with a base of On Fire Red. The skin was prepped with a mix of BB Cream and Fit Me Foundation so it’s beautiful and dewy. The eyebrows were just lightly brushed through with clear Great Lash Mascara. The eyes were done with a very light mix of Baby Lips and the new ‘Barely Branded’ Colour Tattoo [eye shadow] so it gives it a muted colour with a bit of shimmer. We also used the same eye shadow down the centre of the nose and also as a highlight on the cheek area.

Would you say this is more of a day look or a night look?

Grace Lee: It’s one of those looks that you can wear at night and during the day. You can wear it to work like this, or if you wanted a little more drama you can add a liner.

Tell us about the Vivids Collection lipsticks? Are they more of a matte look?

Grace Lee: They are, they’re also more pigmented than other lipstick collections, it’s just a pop of vibrant colour.

How do you adjust the look?

Grace Lee: If you’ve got a big pout, work it! If you’ve got full lips don’t use so much gloss, cause matte lipstick looks really good. If you’ve got small lips, use gloss, any light-reflecting lipstick–gloss is high shine so it’ll make your lips look fuller. And don’t forget the lip liner!
