Serge Haroche and David WinelandPic: The Guardian
A 68 year old, French Jew, Serge Haroche has just been awarded the Noble Prize for Physics which he will share with David Wineland from the United States.
Haroche, who was born in Morocco, explained to the French daily newspaper Le Fiagaro, that he had a difficult time comprehending the information he was being given by a member of the committee representing the Nobel Prize, when he called to explain that Haroche had won. In fact, Haroche was so surprised he needed to sit down before passing on the incredible news to his wife, who was with him on a walk when the call came through on his cell phone.
The $1.2 million prize will be shared by Haroche, who hails from the Collège de France and Ecole Normale Supérieure, and a researcher from the National Institute of Standards and Technology based in Maryland and the University of Colorado, David Wineland
In a statement posted on the Nobel Prize Website, the scientists received the award
“for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems,”
The Nobel Prize is acknowledged to be the most prestigious recognition of scientific excellence in the field.
