The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) signed Tuesday an agreement with Morocco on the establishment of a UNOCT Programme Office in Rabat to build counter-terrorism capacities and cooperation in Africa.

The agreement was signed via videoconference by UNOCT Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, according to Moroccan official news agency MAP.

Voronkov said that the UNOCT office will provide training in counter-terrorism, law enforcement, border security management, prevention of the presence of radicals, and human rights in the fight against terrorism.

The center is a “very innovative” structure that will help African states to upgrade their counter-terrorism activities, making them more efficient, added Voronkov as quoted by MAP.

For his part Bourita said that this center will face the challenges posed by the growing terrorist threats in Africa, adding that it aims to “strengthen the capacity of member states through the development of national training programs in the fight against terrorism.” Enditem
