One of the UK’s oldest surveying firms today launched a probe into alleged bribery on a $100 million (£65 million) hospital project in Morocco.

Cyril Sweett, which was managing the construction of the hospital, has appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to investigate claims by the Wall Street Journal that it had paid a bribe worth 3.5% of the contract to an official in the United Arab Emirates president’s personal foundation to land the deal, and told architectural firm HLW to do the same to win design work.

Sweett, whose shares fell today 10%, said it “knew nothing” about the payments. It added: “The initial review of correspondence and project documentation shows no record of any request for, or payment of, facilitation fees of the nature alleged.”
