Andrew Terlich of Doonan completed the Marathon of the Sands through the Sahara Desert

THE Sahara Desert is a far cry from the leafy suburb of Doonan.
For eager Sunshine Coast runner Andrew Terlich, however, the lure of the challenging Marathon of the Sands earlier this month was too hard to ignore.
The 38-year-old excelled in the harsh terrain of Morocco, finishing 32nd of the 850 starters in the Marathon Des Sables.
“It was pretty tough, but it seemed to all go well for me and I quite enjoyed it, to be honest,” Terlich said of the 240km, six-day slog – regarded by many as the most challenging foot race on the planet.
“It was a fantastic experience. You’re really putting yourself to the test physically and mentally.
“The environment you’re running in, it’s so stark. There are miles and miles of nothing in the middle of the desert.
