Madrid – Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called, on Monday, for a new fishing agreement to be signed between the European Union (EU) and Morocco, official sources in Madrid said.

“There is no reason to break off a fishing agreement that was going well and whish is extremely important for many Spaniards,” Rajoy said after a meeting in Brussels with the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso, the Prime Minister’s office said in a statement.

Rajoy thanked Durao Barroso for the Commission’s efforts towards signing a new fishing agreement with the Kingdom, after the European Parliament rejected the extension of the agreement last December.

The Spanish government announced, last week, that € 9.2 million will be granted to the Spanish fishing sector in compensation for the halt of the agreement.

Spanish Agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Canete will be in Morocco next month to discuss with his Moroccan peer issues relating to agriculture and fisheries, Spanish official sources said.
