The Aquaculture Technology Centre (Ctaqua) and the Marine Science Technology Centre (Cetecima) won a tender from the National Agency for Aquaculture Development (ANDA) from Morocco to carry out a project to strengthen the orderly development of the Moroccan aquaculture production.

The consortium formed by both entities will coordinate the Development and Management Plan of Marine Aquaculture in the African country.

This plan is focused on the region of the Oued Eddahab Lagouira, in the Bay of Dakhla and Cintra Bay, and along the maritime band between the two bays.

The main objectives of the project are to locate the areas of interest for aquaculture and develop a regulatory and planning tool that will offer aquaculture entrepreneurs and administrations involved a marine aquaculture production plan, Ctaqua reported.

The aquaculture plan will be based on a detailed study of the activities that converge on the coastal strip and can generate some kind of conflict.

From the administrative viewpoint, it includes boat traffic, fishing activities and traditional fishing grounds, diving, tourism and maritime leisure and industrial areas, among others.

In addition, socioeconomic, biological and oceanographic, and environmental factors will be considered.

It is anticipated that the consortium has the collaboration of the National Research Institute of Fisheries of Morocco (INRH) for the performance of projects related mainly with the knowledge on environmental variables.

Institute scientists have expertise in the knowledge of the seabed and its biodiversity, and the quality of the marine environment of the Moroccan coast.

It is expected that this project, which will last about 11 months, will be helpful to lay the future of sustainable aquaculture in Morocco.
