Rabat – The United States reiterated its unwavering stance over the autonomy plan in the Sahara, under Morocco’s sovereignty, describing it as serious, realistic and credible.
“The United States’ policy toward the Sahara has remained consistent for many years,” said a joint statement issued, on Friday in Rabat, after the 2nd USA-Morocco strategic dialogue, which was co-chaired by foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar and US secretary of state John Kerry.
The statement underlines that the United States has made clear that Morocco’s autonomy plan is serious, realistic, and credible, and that it represents a potential approach that could satisfy the aspirations of the people in the Sahara to run their own affairs in peace and dignity.
Washington and Rabat affirmed their shared commitment to the improvement of the lives of the people of the Sahara.
The Secretary reaffirmed commitment to a peaceful, sustainable, mutually agreed-upon solution to the Sahara question, the source said.
The United States supports the negotiations carried out by the United Nations, including the work of the UN Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General Ambassador Christopher Ross, and urges the parties to work toward a just, lasting and mutually agreed political solution.
