The holy Islamic month of Ramadan, a time to fast and expiate, will begin tomorrow for Muslims in Italy. And 69 imams will be arriving from Morocco to perform prayers and deliver sermons including, for the first time, six female preachers ”tasked with promoting moderate Islam among women”.
The secretary general of Italy’s Islamic cultural centre at the Great Mosque in Rome, Abdellah Redouane, announced that Wednesday, July 10 will mark the beginning of Ramadan not only for Muslims in Italy but for those in Arab Gulf and North African countries.
”In this occasion we present our wishes to all Muslims in Italy, asking them to take action to help those in need and open their homes and mosques to neighbours in this holy month to share with them this experience not only as a religious practice but mostly in the spirit of Ramadan made of solidarity and mercy”.
The 69 preachers, including six women, sent by Rabat are part of the Italian Islamic confederation, a body created in March 2012 which includes 267 mosques divided into 16 regional federations in northern and southern Italy. ”Our mosques too will be starting the Ramadan month of fasting on July 10”, said Wahid el Fihri, president of the confederation.
