2012-11-09 A brigade commander from al-Qaeda splinter group Movement for Tawhid and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) said Thursday (November 8th) that he defected and returned to his home in neighbouring Niger, AFP reported.

Hicham Bilal was the only black African to hold such a high position in the area.

In Niamey, where he said he was “in the hands of authorities”, Bilal added that many from his 100-strong brigade had defected with him.

“These lunatics from MUJAO are not children of God, they are drug traffickers. They do everything which goes against Islam and to them, a black man is inferior to an Arab or a white,” he said.

Bilal added that MUJAO planned to put the black fighters “in the front as cannon fodder”, in case of war.
