Cairo – Foreign Minister Saâd-Eddine El Othmani voiced, on Sunday in Cairo, Morocco’s support for the efforts led by the Arab League to put an end to bloodshed in Syria.

“Morocco, in its capacity as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has the great responsibility of defending the Arab position regarding the Syrian crisis in international forums,” El Othmani told MAP following the Arab League’s Foreign Ministers meeting.

He said that Morocco fully backs the Arab League’s measures to guarantee protection to civilians in Syria.

On the meeting, El Othmani noted that his Arab peers decided to extend the mission of the Arab observers in Syria and increase the number of its members.

The Moroccan official added that the meeting adopted a political initiative pertaining to the formation of a national unity government in Syria with the participation of several parties.

This government, El Othmani went on to say, should be headed by an independent figure to be tasked with drafting a new constitution and preparing the holding of presidential elections within a well-defined time framework.
