Nearly 29 tons of cannabis have been seized in less than one week in Moroccan northern city of Tangier, a few miles away from Spain, according to the Moroccan police on Thursday.
The police said in a statement that they seized a total of 15.24 tons of cannabis Wednesday on board a Morocco-registered semi-trailer truck which was spotted at a popular neighborhood in Tangier.
This operation is part of the ongoing investigations which enabled the seizure on Saturday of 13.75 tons of cannabis at the port of Tangier-Med, the statement added.
Initial investigations revealed that a cross-border criminal network is involved in the trafficking of these record quantities of drugs, the same source noted.
This network is suspected of creating fictitious companies to hide its illicit activities and to maintain links with criminal networks in Morocco or Europe.
The police said that the investigations are underway to arrest all the people involved in this operation and to unveil all the activities of this criminal network.
