‘With immediate effect’, death penalty suspended since 1993.

Moroccan judges have asked that three killers of Scandinavian tourists be handed down the death sentence ”with immediate effect”. Those charged with the crime had already been sentenced in their first trial to the death penalty in July for the December 2018 murder, which was ”inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS). The three were part of a 24-person group, all of whom involved in the killing in different ways. There has been a moratorium on the death penalty in Morocco since 1993. The victims Luisa Vesterager Jesperse, Danish, 24, and her friend Maren Ueland, a 28-year-old Norwegian national, had been trekking in the Moroccan mountains. The Moroccan judges of the Sale Court of Appeals has now requested that the three be executed immediately and that also a fourth man, who was part of the group but who left prior to the actual killing, also be given the death sentence. Defense lawyers have requested a psychological assessment on the defendants.

A total of 500,000 euros in compensation has been requested for Maren’s family, who would like to create a foundation ”against forms of extremism”.(ANSAmed).
