New York – The Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted on Monday, without a vote, a draft resolution on the Sahara issue, presented by its Chairman, Ambassador of El Salvador to the United Nations, Carlos Enrique Garcia Gonzalez.
The General Assembly “supports the process of negotiations initiated by resolution 1754 (2007) and supported by resolutions 1783 (2007), 1813 (2008), 1871 (2009), 1920 (2010), 1979 (2011), 2044 (2012) and 2099 (2013) of the Security Council in order to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable “political solution”, and commends the efforts made in this regard, says the resolution.
The text calls on the states of the region to cooperate fully with the efforts made under the auspices of the UN and with each other in the search for a mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
The resolution also calls on the parties to continue to show political will and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue in order to enter, in good faith and without preconditions, into a more intensive phase of negotiations, noting the efforts and developments made since 2006, ensuring the implementation of the above-mentioned resolutions of the Security Council.
The General Assembly of the United Nations supports the approach of the Security Council since the adoption of resolution 1754 (2007), referring to the submission by Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara region, which was welcomed by the Council and the entire international community as a serious and credible proposal for a final settlement of the regional dispute over the Sahara.
In a statement to MAP, following the adoption of this resolution, Morocco’s ambassador to the UN, Mohamed Loulichki, noted the “substantial support from several countries, particularly African” for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in April 2007, seen as the “only viable framework for the final solution.”
The new resolution of the General Assembly “confirms support for and welcome the negotiation process,” calling on all parties to cooperate fully with the Secretary General of the UN and his Personal Envoy, “he stressed.
The ambassador noted that by supporting the Security Council’s resolutions, including resolution 2099 ( April 2013 ), the UN General Assembly express support for the immutable parameters determined by the UNCS for a final settlement of this issues that the resolution describes as “dispute.”
The ambassador added that by adopting the new resolution, the General Assembly joined the Security Council in its appeal to other parties that remain trapped in a fixed and inflexible stance, to demonstrate the necessary political will to contribute to the political compromise advocated by the United Nations.
