Rabat – Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane on Saturday reiterated the importance of media freedom, while calling for “responsibility” to preserve “the fundamental objects of consensus.”

“We are in a democratic country that guarantees freedom, but at the same time, we need to demonstrate responsibility in order not to undermine the fundamental objects of consensus,” said Benkirane at a symposium held under the theme “Reading in the present and the future of political communication of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).”

Benkirane, also the PJD General-Secretary, emphasized the importance of having the will to move forward and protect the gains, saying it focuses on “clarity” of journalists to bring the citizen to take an interest in public affairs.

The Premier said that through this meeting, his party wanted the views of other parties of its communication policy, in the sense of “its development and its correction, if necessary,” ensuring that marketing policy must be characterized by “credibility”.

Communication Minister, government spokesman Mustapha El Khalfi said a successful communication policy means that the party should consider themselves in “an ongoing campaign” by implementing a marketing well-crafted political strategy.

He also highlighted the need for the PJD to develop a new communications policy that takes into account the positioning of the party in the new political landscape.

Political communication “is not just speeches and slogans, but also actions, initiatives and work that requires a frame based on accurate data,” he said.

President of the National Union of Moroccan Press (SNPM) Younes Mujahid has, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of opening a debate on the issue of communication in order to address the issues raised, drawing attention to the great challenges facing the sector.

This seminar was attended by several media figures and researchers in this field.
