‘Halal’ suit prohibited for ‘hygienic reasons’
Some hotels in El-Jadida, a popular seaside resort in northern Morocco, have prohibited the use of ‘burkinis’ at their pools. The measure is seen as the opposite extreme of a ban that some residents of Agadir tried unsuccessfully to impose on the use of bikinis during the holy month of Ramadan on their beaches.
‘Burkinis’, which leave only the woman’s face, hands and feet exposed, have been banned at many hotels and resorts in the area, according to local media, and the trend seems to be spreading across the country. El-Jadida’s Ibis hotel has said that the ban is due to reasons of hygiene, since ”microbes can hide” in burkinis.
”Neocolonialist insolence” was what MP Abdelaziz Aftati from the Justice and Development Party (PJD) called it in a letter sent to Tourism Minister Lahcen Haddad.
