MADRID – Spanish authorities say 200 sub-Saharan migrants tried to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco by climbing a 6-meter-tall (20-foot-tall) fence and that about 60 of them succeeded and avoided capture.
The effort late Monday also left seven with minor injuries, according to Melilla Interior Ministry delegate Abdelmalik El Barkani.
Melilla is one of two Spanish enclaves on the northwest African coast that are surrounded by Morocco on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.
Migrants seeking access to Europe camp around Melilla and sometimes try to cross the border fence.
Many are returned to their countries of origin, while others are held in Spain, then released and ordered to leave the country.
