David Law, the 20-year-old from Aberdeen, scored his first win as a professional in Morocco yesterday, shooting a three-under-par 70 in the EPD Tour’s Dar Es Salam Open to move from joint sixth to a one-shot vcitory with a three-under total of 216, writes Colin Farquharson.
His earlier par 73s had left him three shots adrift of the American Timothy Neal, who dropped out of the picture with a 76 for 219.
Over the testing Royal Dar Es Salam course, Law had seven birdies, partially offset by three bogeys for halves of 34 (two under) and 36 (one under) on his way to securing a first prize of €5000.
Law, who won the Scottish boys at Balgownie and Scottish amateur championship at Royal Troon in 2009, scored a second Scottish amateur triumph at Western Gailes last summer before becoming the first amateur since Sandy Pirie in the 1970s to win the Northern Open at Meldrum House. A Walker Cup reserve last year, he turns 21 next month.
He said: “I played really good golf from tee to green all week without much success on the greens over the first two rounds. In the final round, some putts did drop and I managed to see it out. It feels great to have a win so soon after turning pro, although it wasn’t something I was really expecting.”
