Labour MP Khadija Arib is new chairman of Dutch parliament Politics January 14, 2016. Labour MP Khadija Arib has been elected the new chairman of the Dutch lower chamber of parliament after four voting rounds. Arib won the final vote against VVD parliamentarian Ton Elias by 83 votes to 51. She will have the job until March 2017, when the next general election is due to take place.
PVV leader Geert Wilders described Arib’s election as a ‘black day in history’. The party opposes her appointment because she is a dual Dutch-Moroccan national. Arib was born in Morocco and has been an MP since 1998. Arib’s appointment follows the resignation of Anouchka van Miltenburg who stepped down in December over the Teeven drug dealer agreement.
