Nearly 4,000 mayors and city leaders from 124 countries gathered in Rabat on Wednesday (October 2nd) for the largest meeting of local officials in the world, AFP reported.

During the United Cities and Local Governments’ World Summit, mayors of capital cities and representatives of international organisations will address urban development, quality of life, solidarity between territories, the financing of public services and other issues.

“More than 50 % of the world’s population now lives in cities, and our world will always become more urbanised ,” Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said in his opening address to the 3-day Morocco meeting.

By 2030, UN Habitat Executive Director Joan Clos noted, 60 per cent of city dwellers will be less than 18 years old.
