A delegation of experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) started a one-week visit to Morocco to study the feasibility of a nuclear energy program in the country.

The group of experts, led by the Russian OIEA Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov, has scheduled the supervision of several fundamental aspects that guarantee the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and electricity production in the future.

The experts will discuss with national counterparts the existing and planned infrastructure, the handling of radioactive waste, training of technicians and fuel transport.

In addition they will discuss issues related to environmental security and the integration of the nuclear plants in the country’s electrical system.

So far, Morocco’s nuclear agenda is not definite or fully approved, since these are decisions that the King Mohammed VI might make personally.

In any case, according to Energy Minister Abdel Gader Amara, it would take from 10 to 15 years to produce electricity from nuclear sources.

Meanwhile, the nation is working on large projects to produce electricity from renewable sources, mostly wind and solar energies.
