France’s port of La Rochelle, the country’s second-largest cereal-export hub, shipped 24 percent more grain for export in January than in the previous month on a jump in wheat cargoes destined for West Africa.
Outbound grain rose to 247,184 metric tons from 199,459 tons in December, the Grand Port Maritime de La Rochelle said in an e-mailed report today. Cargoes included 224,425 tons of wheat and 14,467 tons of barley.
Ivory Coast was the leading destination with 46,200 tons of wheat, followed bySenegal with 35,901 tons and Ghana with 32,850 tons of the grain.
La Pallice, the industrial port of La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay, handled 19 percent of France’s maritime grain exports in 2009-10, data from national crops office FranceAgriMer show. Rouen on the Seine River accounted for 45 percent of shipments.
