EAST LANSING — Martha Fedorowicz, 22, of East Lansing, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and has departed for Morocco to begin pre-service training as a youth development Peace Corps volunteer. Upon graduation from volunteer training in June, Fedorowicz will teach English to Moroccan youth and develop programs to teach necessary work skills.
Fedorowicz is the daughter of Ellen and Mark Fedorowicz and a graduate of East Lansing High School. She then attended University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she earned a bachelor of arts in political science and French in 2011.
“I knew that I would need on-the-ground, long-term work experience in order to get a job in the field later in life,” she said. “Having the support of my family and friends made the decision to go away for two years very easy.”
During the first three months of her service, Fedorowicz will live with a host family in Morocco to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture.
After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Fedorowicz will be sworn into service and be assigned to a community in Morocco, where she will live and work for two years with the local people.
“I have always loved to travel and explore new cultures and am very interested in how people from different cultures interact,” said Fedorowicz.
“As someone who would eventually like to work in development, I know that it is essential to have this type of experience.”
Fedorowicz joins the 336 Michigan residents currently serving in the Peace Corps and more than 6,713 Michigan residents who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.
