Council Of Europe Supports Morocco¹s Major Democratic Progress: Senior Official

Strasbourg – The Council of Europe welcomes and supports the “important democratic evolution” in Morocco in the light of the reforms launched by HM King Mohammed VI, said Thorbjorn Jagland, the Secretary General of this European body, which aims to back democracy.

“I welcome the important democratic evolution in Morocco. The Adoption the new Constitution, the holding of free and fair elections and the continuation of reform, initiated by HM King Mohammed VI, are, to date, the most remarkable steps,” Jagland said in an interview with MAP news agency, on the occasion of his visit to the Kingdom which started on Tuesday.

He said, in this regard, that his trip aims to reaffirm “the support of the Council of Europe to the Moroccan authorities in the efforts that they are making.”

This visit would be also an occasion to “encourage the (Moroccan) government to carry on the path of reforms in order to promote the values advocated by the Council of Europe such as: democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”
