Construction of Midelt wind power plant in Morocco complete

Midelt wind power plant construction in Morocco is complete after two years of construction and over US$ 282m worth of investment. This is according to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, simply known as ONEE.

“The construction works of this wind farm have been accomplished and the assembly rate of the wind turbines has been upheld despite a health context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said the ONEE in a statement.

About the Midelt wind farm

The Midelt wind farm, with a capacity of 210 megawatts, is located 8 kilometers northeast of the city of Midelt and it extends over an area of 2,300 hectares.

The project was carried out by a consortium formed by Enel Green Power, an Italian multinational renewable energy corporation, headquartered in Rome, and Nareva Holding, an energy company in Morocco wholly owned by the Société Nationale d’Investissement (SNI) (National Investment Company) or Al Mada, as well as ONEE, the pillar of the energy strategy and the armed wing of the State in the water and sanitation sector in Morocco.

The components of this plant, the blades, and towers to be precise, were manufactured in Morocco with the support of the Spanish company  Siemens Gamesa, which specializes in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of wind turbines.

A part of Morocco’s Integrated Wind Farm program

The Midelt wind farm is a part of Morocco’s Integrated Wind Farm program that aims to build a wind farm network with a combined capacity of 850-megawatt (MW) by next year but one.

The other parks to be built under this program include the Jbel Lahdid plant in Essauira with 270 megawatts capacity, the Tiskrad plant in Tarfaya with 100 megawatts capacity, and the Bujador plant with 300 megawatts capacity.

According to ONEE, the projects are a part of the implementation of the royal vision to ensure the Kingdom’s energy supply, in particular through the development of renewable energies.
