I went because: During a school break I wanted to go somewhere exotic. Tickets to Morocco were cheap, so off I went.

Don’t miss: The traditional Moroccan baths. Skip the hotel or hostel hammams and choose one that the locals use. You won’t regret it.

Don’t bother: Going to Fez, unless you’re prepared for the onslaught of people who want to “guide” you. I never made it past these hecklers and into the Medina.

Coolest souvenir: I saved the shopping I wanted to do for the last day. Turns out, that day coincided with a religious sheep shearing holiday and everything was closed.

Worth a splurge: A multiday camel excursion into the Sahara. I spent the night on the sand under a Berber tent.

I wish I’d packed: Wet wipes. There are no bathrooms in the Sahara.
