CAF : War, politics rob Malians of matches

The round of 16 first leg of CAF club competitions were played over the weekend, with some teams taking considerable lead ahead of the return leg, while two Malian clubs were unable to travel out of the country due to political instability there.Below is a round up from West Africa Francophone zone

Champions League

JSM Béjaïa (Algeria) 1 – 2 AFAD Djekanou (Ivory Coast)

Ivory Coast newcomers AFAD Djekanou stunned Algerian representatives JSM Béjaïa 2-1 on Friday in away fixture at the Stade de l’Unité Maghrébine, taking home a vital lead ahead of the return leg in Abidjan in two weeks. Kadjo Vangah Mathieu and Ivorian footballer of the year Allègne Bobley Anderson handed the visitors a two-goal lead in the first half, but the hosts could pull one back before fulltime.

Revenue Authority (Uganda) 0 – 2 Djoliba Bamako (Mali)

Unlike other Malian clubs on schedule, Djoliba were able to make their trip out of the country before Thursday’s military coup to honour their Saturday’s fixture against Ugandan champions Revenue Authority, which ended 2-0 in favour of the visitors thanks to strikes from Alou Bagayoko and Mahamane Cisse.

Horoya (Guinea) 1 – 1 MAS Fez (Morocco)

Confederation Cup champions and 2012 Super Cup winners MAS Fez of Morocco held Guinea’s Horoya AC to a 1-1 draw, after an early 5th minute strike from Hamza Hajji put the North Africans ahead, Isika Seila saved face for the home team in second half after exploiting a defensive error in the visitors’ back half.

Zamalek (Egypt) 1 – 0 Africa Sports (Ivory Coast)

Contrary to previews in Ivory Coast that predicted a big defeat for new champions Africa Sports against Zamalek, the Egyptian giants could only humble their Sunday’s visitors with a one goal through an early 1st minute strike from Beninse-import Razak Omotoyossi.

Tonnerre Bohicon (Benin) – Stade Malien Bamako (Mali)

The above game was postponed following continued political instability in Mali after Thursday’s military coup and the shutting down of the country’s only international airport, which prevented Stade Malien from travelling. Confederation Cup

Etoile Filante (Burkina Faso) 2-2 ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast)

The 1998 African champions Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast settled for a 2-2 draw against close neighbours Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso on Saturday. After taking the lead through Seri Jean Michael’s 21st minute goal, the Ivorians were answered before the break by Narcisse Bambara, while Eric Soulama put the hosts ahead on 49 minutes but Diabaté Samba excitingly restored parity for the visitors to share the spoils.

Séquence FC (Guinea) 0-2 CO Meknès (Morocco)

Visiting Meknès of Morocco are almost sure of reaching the next round of the Confederation Cup after beating Guineans Séquence FC at home 2-0, thanks to goals from Ibrahima Camara Souri (26th) and Salah Iddine Khlifi (75th).

Renaissance (Chad) 3-2 CO Bamako (Mali)

Chad’s Rennaissance defeated their Malian visitors CO Bamako on Sunday but with two goals scored away, the Malians could overturn the deficit in the return leg.

Gamtel (Gambia) – Real Bamako (Mali)

This game was postponed due to the political situation in Mali.
