STUDENTS from Bridgwater College have spent two days packing bags at Morrisons supermarket to raise funds for a community project in Morocco.

The 17 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) students have to find funding for the annual community project, and this was the second year the students packed bags at a supermarket.

The trip to Morocco, which forms part of the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) requirement for their IBDP programme, sees the students take part in community projects, such as planting trees to help prevent landslides and clearing out drainage ditches.

IBDP coordinator, Martyn Aldridge, said: “It is amazing just how generous the shoppers of Bridgwater are.

“The money donated at the checkouts will all go directly to funding Moroccan school children, enabling them to gain an education over the age of 12 years.

“It will also provide adult literacy and numeracy classes for women of the village, who received no formal education when they were younger.

“We are all very grateful to the staff and shoppers at Morrisons.”

Esme Newman, 17, from Bridgwater, formerly of Haygrove School said: “All the IBDP students pulled together well as a team, it will be great preparation for the projects and trekking in Morocco.”
