Algiers  –  The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) emphasized, Monday in Algiers, the “full involvement of all Maghreb states in security efforts in the Sahel and the Sahara.”

In the final communiqué of the Algiers meeting, the Council has stressed “the need to establish a security partnership between the AMU countries and the Sahel and the Sahara region.”

The Maghreb countries have also decided to attend the next conference on partnership, security and development in the Sahel region dubbed “Algiers 2”.

The foreign ministers expressed concern over the developments in the situation in Mali and their impact on security in neighbourly countries.

They have, in this regard, stressed the need to find a political solution to the crisis in Mali, in such a way as to ensure its territorial integrity and spare it military action.

Moroccan foreign minister Saad Dine El Otmani had stressed the need for security cooperation between the Maghreb region and its immediate neighbourhood.

He called for enhancing security cooperation between the AMU countries and the neighbouring areas, especially the Sahel and the Sahara.
