The Moroccan authorities arrested on Thursday six people with suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) group, the Interior Ministry announced in a statement.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 40 years old, were active as part of a cell in northern cities of Sidi Bennour, El Jadida, and Mohammedia, and the central city of Marrakech, the statement pointed out.

The ministry noted that among the arrested, there is an ex-prisoner under the anti-terrorist law, who had links to active elements of the IS branch in Libya.

Thorough security surveillance revealed the adherence of the suspects, who pledged allegiance to IS, to the destructive agenda of the extremist group, through the planning of terror operations in Morocco, the same source pointed out.

The suspects were remanded in custody as part of the investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent prosecutor, it added.
