Around 50,000 Moroccans took to the streets of Rabat on Sunday for a rally in solidarity with the Palestinian people organised by Morocco’s main opposition movement.
Supporters of the al-Adl Wal Ihsan (Justice and Spirituality) party waved Palestinian flags and placards that read: “Palestinians are resisting while Arab regimes are haggling.”
Some protesters burned the Israeli flag while others chanted: “The people to free al-Aqsa,” “A million martyrs are going to Jerusalem” and “We will never forget you Ahmed Yassin,” referring to the Hamas leader assassinated by the Israeli military in 2004.
Organiser Fatah Allah al-Raslan said: “The Arab silence on the Palestinian issue is nothing new.
“It stems from a conspiracy with the occupying power.
“We do not trust the Arab rulers to free Palestine, but the peoples will make themselves heard.”
Al-Adl spokesman Hassan Bennajeh condemned the country’s absolute monarchy, saying: “Everybody knows that the Moroccan regime supports normalisation with Israel and has helped thousands of Moroccan Jews to migrate to and populate Israel.
“We have always been active on issues that touch the heart of Moroccans. While we protest here in support of Palestine, members of our group continue to be persecuted and jailed by authorities for their activism on local issues.”
Authorities have barred al-Adl from taking part in politics, but it helps run welfare programmes for the poor and has developed a support base in the country’s universities.
